As said before, there are 7 steps to designing your own RPG:

  1. Theme/Niche

  2. Core/Dice

  3. Attributes

  4. Classes/Skills

  5. Races

  6. Magic

  7. Lore

Today, our focus is on Step number 2, the Core of your RPG. The Core serves as the backbone that connects all the elements of your game. To ensure expansion into other branches, you need a solid central mechanic, often tied to the dice used in the game.

Let's explore some examples: In Dungeons & Dragons, the recent editions have adopted a classic D20 + Modifier vs Difficulty core system. This approach has proven successful in providing a simple and, more importantly, consistent structure for the game.

Another example is EZD6, which utilizes a set of D6 dice with specific parameters. In this system, a roll of "6" indicates success, while "4" or "5" represents partial success, and anything below is considered a failure.

When developing your own game, consider either creating a unique core mechanic or drawing inspiration from existing ones to further develop your system. You can choose to adopt a D20, D10, D100, or even incorporate multiple dice, as demonstrated in my own game, Meteor Tales: Age of Grit.

In Meteor Tales: Age of Grit, the Grit System serves as the core mechanic. It revolves around a single energy bar called "GRIT," which measures both health and overall character performance. This bar is directly connected to three dice: a D20, a D12, and a D10. When a character is in peak performance, they roll a D20 for any test. In reduced performance, a D12 is used, and in low performance, a D10 is rolled. This approach ensures that the core mechanic is clear, consistent, and enjoyable for the players.

Take your time to carefully consider the core mechanic of your game. Whether it's a D20 system, D10 system, or a unique combination of dice, the core mechanic will set the foundation for your game. In our next discussion, we will delve into Step No. 3! Angelos Kyprianos
